The Dungarvon Whooper (Canadian Myths & Legends)

The Dungarvon Whooper

The Dungarvon Whooper is a Canadian legend that is famous throughout Canada. The story happens in the province of New Brunswick in the miramichi area of the province by the dungarvon river.

The Story

The story begins in the late 19th century when an Irish immigrant was looking for a job. The young man usually named Ryan was new to Canada and carried all his belongings on himself.
The young man picked up a job with a lumber jack camp. He became the camps cook. The boss noticed that Ryan kept his money on his belt so the boss becoming stressed with money decided to kill Ryan one day.
The boss killed Ryan when the workers were in the forest and he stole Ryan's belongings. When the men returned to the camp the boss said Ryan died of natural causes. The men believed the boss and buried Ryan in the forest by the Dungarvon river.
The men walked back to the camp cabin and hear wailing and whoops the whole way back to the camp. That night the forest and the camp was full of wailing, screams, and whoops. The men scared by the sounds they heard left the camp the next day never to return to the camp.

The Legend

The legend is that if you go into the woods near the burial site of Ryan you will hear whooping and wailing. The sounds are blood curdling and usually cause the person to leave the forest. If you continue on deeper into the forest and happen to come to the burial site you may see an apparition of the young man. The young man will look sad or depressed and will stand staring at you. If you approach it the apparition will give out a sound that is supposed to stop you in your tracks and bring fear to everyone who hears it. The apparition will then disappear and you'll be left in the forest alone. The apparition is not violent and is just said to be looking to get justice for his murder.

A priest blessed the woods and has allowed Ryan's soul to rest apparently but people still believe that he is still in the forest looking to get back what is his.
