The Legend of Zelda (Nintendo Entertainment System)

The Legend of Zelda is a classic series that has spawned multiple games over various Nintendo consoles. However personally I never got into the series until 2018 when I took the plunge and played the Ocarina of Time for the first time in my life on the 3ds. The game was fun and challenging after beating it I moved on to other games. After obtaining an NES Classic Edition and playing Dr. Mario to death I decided to jump back into the series and play the original NES game. Here is my review of the Legend of Zelda for the NES.

The Legend of Zelda

The game starts off with a little green figure you will know as Link. Link isn't an overly strong or fast character. You obtain a weak sword and a small shield and are set off on an adventure to save the world Hyrule and defeat the evil forces tearing it apart. Ganon is the leader of the evil forces and is holding princess Zelda in Death Mountain.

Through exploring the world you will find little black doors in the game that actually hold a number of things. Sometimes Link enters the door and finds a small store while other times he'll find an old man or woman who gives advice for free or for a price even some gambling dens can be found. Some items are a must the candle and upgraded shield are needed for some points in the game and killing reoccurring enemies will provide you with hearts, currency and fairies.

Once you get the hold of the action system and buy some upgrades you can take on the dungeon challenges. These challenges still hold up today. There are puzzles and secrets that can be hard to solve but solving them brings a sense of achievement and make you want to continue for more. There are eight dungeons in the game and the final Death Mountain. Each dungeon has unique enemies and secrets that keep the game fun from beginning to end.

All of the dungeons have a final boss that can be hard to defeat. Some of the dungeons bosses require a certain item to be defeated and if that item hasn't been obtained yet the player has to back track and try and find the item needed to destroy  the final boss. After you beat the dungeon boss you are given an extra heart piece and another piece of the triforce.

Once you have obtained enough heart pieces you can upgrade your sword which is a must to defeat enemies in the latter dungeons. Once you have explored the map and dungeons extensively you can enter death mountain. Death Mountain can't be accessed fully until you defeat all the dungeons and have a complete triforce.

Death Mountain is basically a really long dungeon and the final boss is Ganon. Once you reach Ganon you realize that he can only be defeated with a special arrow. If you haven't collected this arrow yet you will have to research death mountain and find it. When Ganon is defeated you get to save Zelda and the game credits roll. A second harder quest has now been unlocked.

The whole game took me about twelve hours to beat. I explored the dungeons and map extensively as well as upgrading all my equipment. The game at times can be hard or a little confusing if you haven't played puzzle games before. Also some items like bombs and arrows are necessary at certain points so if you run out  of either you will have to leave the dungeon and collect or buy more before advancing. The dungeon enemies also reset once you leave the dungeon. If you die in the dungeon you will continue at the beginning of the dungeon with three heart pieces. When you die in the dungeon only some of the enemies will re-spawn in the dungeon. It is a game that will challenge you and cause frustration at times but it is worth it.

Final Thoughts

Overall the game is really fun and exciting to beat. It is a piece of video gaming history and still is challenging in 2018. Defeating Ganon was a challenge that was well worth it and exploring Hyrule was a real treat and wasn't at all tiring or boring at all, there was always something else to discover or see.

I would recommend this game to any Nintendo fan or casual gamer who likes puzzle games. The game's action mechanics are simple and almost anyone can pick up this game and play it with little to no experience with video games.

I wouldn't recommend it hardcore gamers looking for the best graphics and challenges. The action mechanics are simple so this might put off some gamers who like complicated controls and fighting combinations. The game lacks a lot of  features that hardcore gamers are accustomed too. I would recommend ocarina of time to hardcore gamers.
